ABOUT THIS COURSE

The qualification you need to work on air conditioning

Under the UK F-Gas regulations, anyone who installs, services, maintains, repairs, leak checks or decommissions stationary air conditioning, refrigeration or heat pump equipment containing fluorinated gases must hold the right certificate for the work they do. Category 1 is the full qualification. It covers all of those activities on equipment of any size and refrigerant charge, which is why it is the one most engineers and employers ask for. Categories 2 to 4 are narrower awards that limit what you can work on. You will study the pre-course book and video at home before you arrive, then spend five days with us on the theory and, above all, practising on working systems in our workshop. On the final day you sit your practical assessment and the online multiple-choice exam.
CATEGORY 1 LETS YOU Install new air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump systems Service, maintain and repair equipment of any size Carry out leak checks, including on systems that require them by law Recover refrigerant from equipment Decommission systems safely If you work for yourself or run a business that installs or maintains this equipment, the business also needs F-Gas company certification through a certification body. We will explain how this works on the course.

ASSESSMENT AND CERTIFICATION

How you get certified

You are assessed in two parts: a practical assessment carried out on real equipment in our workshop, and an online multiple-choice theory exam. Both are taken on the final day of the course. When you pass, you receive the City & Guilds Level 2 Award in F-Gas and ODS Regulations, Category 1. City & Guilds also issues a digital credential you can share with employers. The qualification does not currently have an expiry date. If you do not pass part of the assessment first time, we will talk you through what went wrong and arrange a resit.
